How does wood differ from other materials?
Wood is an ‘honest’ material with its own will and identity. Even though it is flexible and has almost limitless potential, there are still limits to how you can work with it: Force it and it can break. It is flammable and can warp if the temperature fluctuates. You therefore have to respect wood when working with it, and I like that. Wood also evokes a sense of calm and thoughtfulness – and that fits in well with modern society’s longing for a cleaner, simpler life both at mental and material levels.
What is the hallmark of good design?
It lasts! The objects I surround myself with must retain their aesthetic value, improve with age and last a long time. I always try to make something that I’ll love more and more every day – instead of the opposite!
What does sustainability mean to you?
I am very careful when choosing objects for my home, and always prefer designs and foods made with respect for natural resources close to the consumer. My job means I have a natural interest in design and love beautiful objects, but I’d always rather have one simple object with depth, integrity and a purpose than more objects that cannot stand the test of time and quickly become uninteresting.
What is Munio’s concept from a design perspective?
Designers face the challenge of creating objects that are both beautiful to behold and that can change the world we live in, and it was important for me to keep the aesthetics as pure and simple as the concept behind the project. I also want to make user-friendly objects that easily fit into people’s everyday lives, because buying sustainable products should not be difficult or the right of the chosen few. Our goal is to create new classics that people want in their lives for many years. Wood, in particular, ages gracefully, and choosing a product that you won’t want to replace is also a sustainable approach to consumption.
What is your own favorite piece in the collection?
Right now, I’m especially fond of the tray, which comes in two sizes. Its aerodynamic contours remind me of a plane and its flat form brings out the glow of the wood and its natural grain. I’m looking forward to using the small tray for a cup of coffee, a book, and whatever else I need when I want to kick back and relax.
